The 2012 Tastes of the Tablelands Festival is being held at the Chinese Temple Grounds in Atherton on the 9th of September, from 10am through to 4pm. Entry is $8 at the gate, children enter free.

A free shuttle bus will be available from 9.00am till 4.00pm for patrons wishing to park and travel from the centre of town to the festival site. Pickup points will be:

• The car park behind the Barron Valley Hotel
• Outside Big W in Mabel St
• The Council car park in Mabel St
• Platypus Park

Parking is available in the area beside the festival site, in Platypus Park and along the old railway line in Weaver St opposite the site.

Taking a break with our best four-legged friend in tow is not to be missed. There's the fun of discovering new places together, and well, just sharing all those new smells, sights and sounds. For those of us with fur-children, finding the places that welcome you with open arms when you are holidaying is something that occupies our minds - and time. 

Just up the road on the Atherton Tableland region, many locals are mindful of people holidaying with pets and many places cater specifically to the needs of owners and their dogs. 

Probably the best known is Chilverton Cottages, on the Kennedy Highway between Herberton and Ravenshoe. Owner Gwen Bradford says catering to people with pets is a pleasure. 

"People holidaying with dogs are extremely mindful of taking care and control of their pets and of not disrupting other holiday makers," she says. 

"Their animals are their best friends and they treat the places they go with them with respect because they allow them entry."

Chilverton Cottages is a pet's paradise where guests and their dogs are welcomed with open arms and a brimming waterbowl. 

On check in, the fur-children get complimentary treats, doggie beds supplied and even a doggie day spa (yes, really!). 

Gwen says she offers puppy-sitting for guests. 

"While there are pet-friendly attractions some places like National Parks are off limits, so I puppy-sit the pooches while people explore," Gwen says.

At Ravenshoe, the steam train railway allows dogs in the caboose of the Capella engine as it puffs to Tumoulin. At Herberton Historic Village, dogs on leads are welcome to explore the vintage streets and buildings with their masters. Over at Granite Gorge Nature Park at Chewko Rd, ther are lots of walks to explore and as long as your dog is on a lead, you can enjoy all of this natural marvel. 

Getting refreshments at local restaurants and cafes is also possible, as long as you know where to go. At Skybury's Australian Coffee Centre, dogs on leads and their owners are welcomed and shown to the northern timber veranda, where the pets are offered a bowl of water. At Coffee Works, also in Mareeba, there's a shady undercover area out the front with a post to tether Fido while you dine. 

Hospitality is also extended to pets at Yungaburra's Nick's Swiss Italian Restaurant, where small dogs can join their owners on the veranda in front of the main restaurant. 

And the motto for making friends when holidaying with pets is always "if in doubt, call ahead and ask" - you are likely to be pleasantly surprised. 

The Sit Down Comedy Club opened the Cairns Comedy season for 2012 to a full house of 260 people and 13 fabulous contestants at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival's RAW COMEDY open mic competition.

57 barramundi were weighed in for a total weight of 670 kg at Barra Bash 2009!

Lake Tinaroo has a population of large barramundi stocked by the Tableland Fish Stocking Society Inc.

A Stocked Impoundment Permit (annual $35 per family & weekly $7) is required to fish Lake Tinaroo.

Mangrove Jack, Sooty Grunter, Archerfish, Sleepy Cod and Redclaw Crayfish are also caught in the lake.

The competition is fished from Friday 6.30 pm to Sunday 11.30 am with presentations from 12 noon. Nomination forms are available from tackle stores on the Tablelands and in Cairns, Mossman & Innisfail.

THE TINAROO RURAL FIRE BRIGADE

QLD FIRE & RESCUE has declared a FIRE DANGER WARNING for the WHOLE of QLD. 

Beginning at midnight Sunday 4th September 2011 until further notice. 

The  BAN means all fire irrespective of size requires a PERMIT TO LIGHT FIRE. This can be obtained by contacting the local FIRE WARDENS Don Neville 07 40958388 or Les Green 07 40958006.

The Daintree Rainforest is the most significant tropical rainforest in Australia and sustains a unique range of flora and fauna. over the past 100 years parts of the Daintree hve been cleared to create land for farms that are no longer in operation. Replanting these cleared areas with rainfroest trees provides important habitat for the endangered Cassowary and 100 other rare and threatened species found in the Daintree.

Skybury's Australian Coffee Centre at Mareeba has an impressively large, cast iron drum roaster now roasting the daily grind of Skybury coffee in the foyer, sending the aroma of freshly toasted coffee beans into the surrounding fields.

"We're roasting at 9am each day and it’s a terrific process to watch. It takes about 15 minutes to complete the cycle, and it's tantalising - you really want that cup of coffee when you smell the roasting beans!," said Skybury owner Ian MacLaughlin.

Skybury's new roaster has a capacity of 15kg per roast and is equipped with a loader and separate green bean hopper to enable continuous roasting so it’s capable of processing up to 90kg per hour. The roaster has probes which monitor the temperature of the coffee roasting drum and the coffee beans. These measurements are used by internal computers to modulate the gas supply and temperature according to the pre-set roast specifics.

Published results of a survey conducted in 2007 by Galaxy Research found that nearly $1Billion is spent on unwanted Christmas gifts each year. In a bid to rescue rainforests at the same time as Christmas, not for profit organisation Rainforest Rescue is running a ‘Rescue Christmas Campaign’ offering unique Rainforest Gift Cards, targeting those 'difficult to buy for' friends and loved ones.

Right now, rainforests and their inhabitants are under greater threat than ever.

In the Daintree of far North Queensland, large areas are situated on freehold land and laws and regulations to prevent development are inadequate. Securing and protecting rainforest habitat for the endangered Cassowary — of which only 1,000 remain — is urgent.  Meanwhile, only 1% of the most diverse ecosystem in New South Wales — The Big Scrub — remains. Planting and restoring this area is vital to the survival of over 38 threatened species of flora and 61 species of threatened fauna.

Rainforest Rescue are protecting rainforests with projects that re-establish habitat through planting, maintenance and restoration programs, as well as purchasing and protecting high conservation value rainforest. Amongst other project outcomes, this year Rainforest Rescue successfully planted over 10,000 rainforest trees and acquired their 11th property in the Daintree.

With their 'Rescue Christmas' Campaign, Rainforest Rescue are promoting Rainforest Gift Cards devoted to a range of projects that allow purchasers to nominate number of trees planted, or square metres / hectares protected. For example, $25 will save five square metres of the Daintree Rainforest which Rainforest Rescue will purchase and protect on the Gift Card recipient’s behalf. Each card details the gift with a special front cover photo or exclusive Leunig cartoon along with an inner description of the project outcomes achieved.

“Gift Card sales will make a significant contribution to both our Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project and the Plant a Rainforest campaign. This year more Australians are recognising how we need to make a difference when it comes to our environment.” Said Kelvin Davies, CEO of Rainforest Rescue.

On 13th of May 2009 the purchase of Lot 29 Cape Tribulation Road in the Daintree was completed; our thanks and congratulations to everyone for their part in making this happen. This property represents acquisition Number 11 in the Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project – identifying and purchasing precious rainforest at risk of development and establishing Nature Refuge status, which protects it forever under covenants ratified by the Queensland Parliament in Australia.

Rainforest Rescue will be continuing with their amazingly successful Plant a Rainforest Project in the Daintree from the 22nd to the 26th of June and from the 29th of June to the 3rd of July. Rainforest Rescue announces the purchase of a tenth property through the Daintree Buy Back and Protect Forever Project.

This is extremely good news for the critically endangered Southern Cassowary. It prevents another housing development with all its associated dangers – dogs, loss of corridors, traffic and road kills – from destroying the delicately balanced habitat of this “keystone” species of the rainforest. Property No. 10 is essential habitat for this fabulous big bird, whose numbers are far fewer than the already low previous estimates.

The vegetation type is described as wet to very wet vine forest with emergent large-fruited red mahogany, having a rainforest understorey merging into simple to complex mesophyll to notophyll vine forest. The biodiversity values of this latter ecosystem type are described as being “very species rich”. Lofty clumps of locally endemic fan palms and black palms grace the northern sector of the property whilst two species of cycad and numerous ferns abound in the denser southern part. These include the King Fern, which, with fronds up to 5 metres long, is reputed to be the largest of all ferns. It is as a primitive plant, very similar types having been around for 300 million years.

The process is now underway to have to have the land protected in perpetuity by an Act of the Queensland Parliament by having the property declared as the Tree Friends Nature Refuge.

In announcing this major step forward, Executive Officer Kelvin Davies was especially proud that it has been achieved without any government funding. “It’s a significant achievement for community conservation, proving that donations from individuals and businesses make a big difference,” said Kelvin.

Equally exciting is the news that Rainforest Rescue is now on the verge of buying an eleventh property. Property No. 11 is located less than a kilometre away and is just as critical for Cassowaries and other rare and endangered species, like the Bennetts Tree-kangaroo. It will provide a vital corridor through the rural subdivision from the Daintree National Park on its northern side to two declared Nature Refuges to the south.

“We only need to raise $85,000 to complete the purchase of this next vital property – such a small amount to preserve forever another slice of the irreplaceable Daintree – and we call upon concerned Australians to contribute to this campaign,” Kelvin adds. “The current owner is committed to conservation and is offering the lot to Rainforest Rescue at less than market value, so we have taken an option to purchase.”

With the end of the financial year looming, Rainforest Rescue is now seeking tax-deductible donations from the community or business sponsorships to protect this two hectares property to establish and protect forever the wildlife corridor that it offers between the Daintree National Park and the Perna Greene Nature Refuge.
